Ramadan in Non-Muslim Countries: A Practical Guide

Fasting where most people are not: what to say at work and school, community iftars, which moon announcement to follow, and the short fasts of February 2027.

This guide explains common views and sources. It is not a fatwa. For your own situation, ask a scholar or imam you trust.

Fasting where nobody around you is fasting is a different experience. There is no adhan from the street, lunch meetings carry on, the moon announcement comes from a council you may never have heard of, and iftar is at 17:30 on a Tuesday when you are still on the train. None of this makes Ramadan harder in the ways that matter, but it does need planning. This guide covers the practical side for Ramadan 2027.

The dates, and who announces them

Ramadan 1448 is expected to begin on Monday 8 February 2027, with the first tarawih on the evening of Sunday 7 February. Eid al-Fitr is expected on Tuesday 9 March, or Wednesday 10 March where the month completes 30 days or the moon is sighted later. These are Umm al-Qura calendar dates; the actual date in your country depends on moon sighting or the local authority and may differ by a day.

Expected start. In your country the date may be a day later, depending on moon sighting or the local authority.

In a Muslim-minority country, there is no single national authority. The announcement usually comes from one of these:

Source Basis Typical examples
A national council of mosques or scholars Local sighting, regional sighting, or calculation Councils in the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands
A continental body Astronomical calculation announced in advance The Fiqh Council of North America (calculation); the European Council for Fatwa and Research
Your own masjid Follows one of the above, or a country of origin Many masjids follow Saudi Arabia, Turkey or Morocco
A sighting committee Local naked-eye sighting on the 29th night Committees in Australia, South Africa, parts of the UK

The hadith is the same for everyone: fast when you see it, break the fast when you see it, and if it is hidden, complete thirty days (Bukhari 1909; Muslim 1081). The differences come from how "seeing" is applied: where, by whom, and whether calculation can stand in for it. Moon sighting explained covers the positions. In practice, find out which announcement your masjid follows, and follow that. The astronomical new moon is on 6 February 2027, so a sighting on the evening of 7 February is expected in most of the world; a one-day difference between communities is normal.

Short fasts: the advantage of February

Ramadan 2027 falls in late winter in the northern hemisphere. Fasts in Europe and North America are about 11 to 13 hours, the shortest in roughly a decade for those regions. The Gulf has around 13 hours. The southern hemisphere has the longer side: 14 to 15 hours in Sydney, Cape Town and Buenos Aires.

Times are calculated in your browser with the open-source adhan library. Your masjid's timetable may differ by a few minutes; for congregation (iqamah) times always follow your masjid.

For someone in London, suhoor ends around 05:30 at the start of the month and iftar is around 17:20; by the end of the month, Fajr is near 04:50 and Maghrib near 18:10. That means iftar during or just after the working day, and a suhoor that does not mean getting up in the middle of the night. The fast length guide has more cities, and the Ramadan 2027 overview covers the key dates.

Work: the conversation and the arrangements

Most colleagues have heard of Ramadan; few know what it involves. A two-minute conversation with your manager in the week before covers it:

  • "I'll be fasting from before dawn until sunset, about 05:30 to 17:30. I'm not eating or drinking in the day, including water."
  • "I'd like to take lunch at sunset instead of midday on some days, or shorten lunch and leave half an hour earlier."
  • "Energy dips mid-afternoon; morning is my best time, so I'll put heavier work there if that suits the team."
  • "I'll pray Dhuhr and Asr during the day; ten minutes each, in the meeting room or wherever is free."

Employers in many countries are expected to accommodate religious practice where reasonable, and most will if asked early. The working during Ramadan article has schedules for shift workers, drivers and those with physical jobs, and covers finding a place to pray. Decline lunch invitations with "after Ramadan"; colleagues are glad to be told rather than left guessing.

School

Children before puberty are not required to fast, and whether a younger child does part-days is a family decision. Whatever you decide, a short note to the class teacher helps:

  • What Ramadan is, in two sentences, and the dates (8 February to 8 or 9 March, expected).
  • Whether your child is fasting, and on which days.
  • A request for a quiet place at lunch, away from the lunch hall if they prefer.
  • A note that PE is fine.

Many schools have Ramadan guidance of their own; ask.

Community: finding iftars and tarawih

A masjid iftar is the fastest way to stop feeling alone in the month. Most masjids in Muslim-minority countries host iftar every night or at weekends, and welcome anyone, including non-Muslim colleagues who want to see what it is. Student Islamic societies and community centres run them too. The reward for feeding a fasting person is the reward of their fast, without reducing theirs (Tirmidhi 807), which is why hosts are so keen.

Tarawih in a minority country starts 20 minutes or so after Isha, which in February in Europe is around 19:00 to 19:30, early enough for a working night. Check the masjid's Ramadan noticeboard for the schedule and the number of rak'ahs; there is wide variation between masjids and all of it is fine.

Time zones and family abroad

If your family is in another country, their iftar is not yours. A parent in Lahore breaks the fast five hours before a daughter in Toronto. Set the prayer times for both cities on your phone so you know when they are free, and fix one weekly video call after their iftar and before yours. A video iftar across zones does not work; a call after tarawih usually does.

When you travel home during the month, the fast and the prayer times follow where you are, including the date, which may differ by a day from where you started; fasting while travelling explains the rules for the trip itself.

Eid

Eid falls on a working day, Tuesday 9 or Wednesday 10 March 2027. Book the day off in advance, with the second day as a possibility if the date moves. Eid prayer is early, often 08:00 to 10:00, and many masjids hold two or three sittings; check the noticeboard. Zakat al-fitr is paid before the prayer, at the amount announced by your local masjid or council.

A short checklist

  • Find out which announcement your masjid follows and when it will be made (the evening of 7 February).
  • Print the timetable for your city and method; put the QR code or app on the family's phones.
  • Speak to your manager and your children's teachers in the first week of February.
  • Choose one or two community iftars a week.
  • Book the Eid day off.

The Qur'an says Allah intends ease for you, not hardship (the meaning of 2:185). A February Ramadan with 12-hour fasts, in a city with masjids that announce, host and welcome, is one of the easier months a Muslim abroad will have; planning turns that ease into a good month.

Questions and answers

Which day do I start if the masjids in my city disagree?

Follow one masjid or council consistently, usually the one you pray at, and do not change mid-month. The difference comes from different sighting criteria, not from anyone being careless. Ask the imam there if you are unsure which announcement they follow.

Do I have to tell my employer I am fasting?

No, but it is usually in your interest. A short conversation about lunch, meetings and iftar time prevents most awkwardness and lets your manager plan. In many countries employers are expected to make reasonable adjustments for religious practice.

My child is the only Muslim in the class. Should they fast?

Children are not obliged to fast before puberty. Many families let younger children do part-days or a few full days to feel part of it; that is a family decision. A short note to the teacher explaining Ramadan and asking for a quiet place at lunch is usually enough.

Can I follow my home country's dates?

Scholars differ on whether Ramadan begins on one global sighting or on local sightings, and both positions are held by serious scholars. The majority advice for someone living abroad is to follow the Muslim community where they live. Ask a scholar you trust.

How long is the fast in February 2027?

Short in the northern hemisphere, about 11 to 13 hours in Europe and North America and about 13 hours in the Gulf, and longer in the southern hemisphere, about 14 to 15 hours in Sydney, Cape Town and Buenos Aires. The table on this page shows twelve cities.
