Istikhara Prayer: How to Ask Allah's Guidance on a Decision

How to pray salat al-istikhara: the two rak'ahs, the dua from Sahih al-Bukhari with meaning, what it is for, reading the result, and why no dream is needed.

This guide explains common views and sources. It is not a fatwa. For your own situation, ask a scholar or imam you trust.

Istikhara means "seeking the good". It is a short prayer and a dua for anyone facing a choice: a job, a marriage proposal, a house, a move, a business partner. Jabir ibn Abdullah said the Prophet (peace be upon him) taught them istikhara for all their affairs as he taught them a surah of the Qur'an (Bukhari 1162). That is the whole method: two rak'ahs and the dua. Everything else people attach to it is custom.

What istikhara is for

  • A permissible choice between options: accept or decline, this or that, now or later.
  • After you have done your own thinking: gathered the facts, consulted people who know (the Qur'an calls for consultation in 3:159), and formed a leaning or reached a genuine deadlock.
  • Before you commit, not after.

It is not for deciding whether to do something obligatory or forbidden; those are already decided. It is not a replacement for research, and not a lottery: you do not pray and then "see what happens" without doing anything. The Qur'an says, in meaning, that you may dislike something that is good for you and love something that is bad for you, and Allah knows while you do not (2:216). Istikhara is the prayer of someone who accepts that.

How to pray it

  1. Make wudu and pray two rak'ahs of voluntary prayer, like the two of Fajr (how to pray). Al-Kafirun (109) in the first rak'ah and al-Ikhlas (112) in the second are commonly recited; any surah is fine.
  2. After the salam, raise your hands and say the dua below. Praise Allah and send salawat on the Prophet first, as with any dua.
  3. Name the matter at the two places marked in the dua, in any language: "this job at X", "marrying Y".
  4. Then act on whichever option you lean to, and take the outcome as the answer.

Pray it at any time that voluntary prayer is allowed; many prefer the night or the last third of it. Avoid the three disliked times (sunrise, zenith, sunset). If you cannot pray (for example during menstruation), the majority of scholars allow saying the dua alone.

The dua (Bukhari 1162)

Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi-'ilmika, wa astaqdiruka bi-qudratika, wa as'aluka min fadlikal-'azim; fa-innaka taqdiru wa la aqdir, wa ta'lamu wa la a'lam, wa anta 'allamul-ghuyub.

"O Allah, I seek Your guidance by Your knowledge, and I seek ability by Your power, and I ask You of Your great bounty; for You have power and I have none, You know and I do not, and You are the Knower of the unseen."

Allahumma in kunta ta'lamu anna hadhal-amra [name the matter] khayrun li fi dini wa ma'ashi wa 'aqibati amri, faqdurhu li wa yassirhu li, thumma barik li fih.

"O Allah, if You know that this matter is good for me in my religion, my livelihood and the outcome of my affairs, then decree it for me, make it easy for me, and then bless me in it."

Wa in kunta ta'lamu anna hadhal-amra [name the matter] sharrun li fi dini wa ma'ashi wa 'aqibati amri, fasrifhu 'anni wasrifni 'anhu, waqdur liyal-khayra haythu kan, thumma ardini bih.

"And if You know that this matter is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood and the outcome of my affairs, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and decree for me the good wherever it may be, and then make me content with it."

The hadith records a slight variation, "in this world and the next" in place of "the outcome of my affairs"; either wording is reported.

How to read the result

The answer is not a feeling of certainty, a sign, or a dream. Scholars describe it as the direction things take:

  • Ease. Doors open, the paperwork goes through, the people involved agree. Take that as a green light and proceed.
  • Obstruction. The offer is withdrawn, the finance falls through, you lose the desire for it. Take that as the matter being turned away, without resentment; this is exactly what you asked for.
  • A change of heart without any outside cause is also a result, if it is a settled change rather than a passing mood.

If nothing changes and you still lean to one option, go ahead with it. You have asked Allah to turn you away from harm; proceeding in trust is the point. A heaviness in the chest alone is not a sign unless it stays and grows.

Common misunderstandings

Custom What the hadith says
Wait for a dream; green means yes, black means no Nothing about dreams or colours
Sleep facing the Qibla immediately after Not mentioned; sleeping in wudu is a general sunnah
Ask a sheikh or relative to do it for you The Prophet taught each person to do it themselves
Istikhara replaces asking people's advice Consultation comes first; istikhara is after it
It must be prayed before Fajr or on a particular day Any permitted time
If you feel unsure afterwards, the answer is no Feelings are not the measure; events and settled inclination are

Worked example

You have two job offers: one pays more with a longer commute through Maghrib; the other pays less, close to a mosque, with flexible hours. You list pros and cons, ask your spouse and a colleague, and lean to the second. Tonight after Isha you pray two rak'ahs, say the dua naming "accepting the offer from the nearer company", and sleep. In the morning you accept it. A week later the first company withdraws its offer anyway. Both events are an answer; neither needed a dream.

Istikhara sits naturally with other voluntary prayers and dhikr after salah; the timing of voluntary prayers explains when the two rak'ahs can be prayed. For matters involving others' rights, such as marriage or business, ask a scholar or imam you trust as part of the consultation, and then pray istikhara.

Questions and answers

Do I need to see a dream after istikhara?

No. The hadith says nothing about dreams. The answer is in how matters unfold and what you then feel able to do. A dream, if one comes, is not a ruling and should not override clear facts or good advice.

Can I pray istikhara more than once for the same decision?

Yes. Some companions repeated it several times when still unsure. Once is enough for the sunnah; repetition is for your own peace.

Can I ask someone else to pray istikhara for me?

The hadith teaches each person to pray it for their own matter. Others may make dua for you, which is welcome, but istikhara is yours.

Can I pray istikhara for whether to pray or fast or give charity?

No. Istikhara is for permissible matters where you are choosing between options, not for obligations or prohibitions, which are already decided. You may pray it about when or how, for example which day to travel for Umrah.

What if I prayed istikhara and the thing I wanted did not happen?

Then that is the answer you asked for: the dua specifically asks Allah to turn you away from what is not good for you and to make you content with His decision.
