Duha Prayer: Time Window, Rak'ahs and How to Pray It
Salat al-Duha is the mid-morning prayer: its window from about 15 minutes after sunrise to just before noon, two to eight rak'ahs, and fitting it into work.
This guide explains common views and sources. It is not a fatwa. For your own situation, ask a scholar or imam you trust.
Salat al-Duha is the voluntary prayer of the mid-morning, after the sun has risen and before it reaches its highest point. It is sometimes called the prayer of the forenoon, and in some books the prayer of the "oft-returning" (al-awwabin). It is short, it falls in a part of the day when nothing else is due, and it carries a reward out of proportion to its length.
Why pray duha
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that every morning a charity is due for each joint of the body, that every tasbih, tahmid, tahlil and takbir is a charity, and that two rak'ahs prayed in the forenoon cover all of that (Sahih Muslim 720). Abu Hurayrah reported that the Prophet advised him three things: fasting three days a month, two rak'ahs of duha, and praying witr before sleeping (Bukhari 1981; Muslim 721).
All four schools treat duha as recommended. It is not one of the sunnah prayers attached to the five daily prayers (those are listed in sunnah prayer times); it stands on its own. Some scholars note that the Prophet did not pray it every day, which is why it is often described as a sunnah rather than a confirmed sunnah; others regard it as confirmed because he recommended it. The practical conclusion is the same: it is good to pray it, and nothing is owed if it is missed.
When is duha?
Duha sits between two periods when voluntary prayer is not offered: the time of sunrise and the time just before the sun reaches its zenith. Those periods are explained in forbidden prayer times.
| Starts | Ends | |
|---|---|---|
| Duha window | about 15–20 minutes after sunrise (when the sun is roughly a spear's length above the horizon) | about 10–15 minutes before Dhuhr (before the sun is at its highest) |
Within that window, the preferred time is later rather than earlier: when the sun is high and the morning has warmed. A hadith in Sahih Muslim describes the prayer of the oft-returning as being when the young camels feel the heat of the sand.
An illustrative example (not a named city) where sunrise is 06:45 and Dhuhr is 12:30; read your own times from the prayer times:
- Earliest: about 07:00–07:05
- Preferred: around 09:00–10:30
- Latest: about 12:15
In midwinter at high latitudes, sunrise may be 08:30 and Dhuhr 12:10, which leaves a window of roughly 08:45 to 11:55. In midsummer the window is much longer. Check your city each month rather than relying on a fixed clock time.
Ishraq
Some scholars call duha prayed at the start of the window "ishraq", the sunrise prayer, and quote a report in al-Tirmidhi (586) about the reward of sitting in dhikr after Fajr until sunrise and then praying two rak'ahs. Others regard ishraq as simply the earliest form of duha. Either way, the prayer is the same two rak'ahs, prayed once the sun has risen fully.
How many rak'ahs
| Number | Note |
|---|---|
| 2 | The minimum, and what the Prophet recommended to Abu Hurayrah |
| 4 | Reported by Aisha (Muslim 719) |
| 6 | Mentioned in some reports of varying strength |
| 8 | Reported by Umm Hani for the day of the opening of Makkah (Bukhari 1176); scholars differ whether it was duha or a victory prayer |
Pray in pairs: two rak'ahs with tashahhud and salam, then another two if you wish. The number of rak'ahs of all the prayers is set out in the rak'at table.
How to pray duha
- Make sure you have wudu and that the window is open (sun well up, well before Dhuhr).
- Intend two rak'ahs of duha in the heart; no spoken formula is needed.
- Takbir, al-Fatiha, a short surah, ruku', two sujud, stand for the second rak'ah.
- Al-Fatiha, a short surah, ruku', two sujud, tashahhud, salawat, salam.
- Repeat in pairs if praying more.
There is no required recitation. Some people recite al-Shams in the first rak'ah and al-Duha in the second because of their names; this is a habit, not a rule. The full method with each position is in how to pray, and a short dhikr afterwards is in dhikr after salah.
Fitting duha into the day
Duha falls during working and school hours for most people, which is both the difficulty and the opportunity.
- At home or working from home: pray it after the first stretch of work, around 09:30–10:30.
- At work: a mid-morning break is enough; two rak'ahs take under five minutes. The same quiet space used for Dhuhr serves for duha. Practical ideas are in salah at work or school.
- Shift workers who sleep in the morning: pray it before sleeping if the sun is already up, or skip it without worry.
- On a weekend or holiday: this is a good time to pray four or more, with longer recitation.
A simple pattern that many people keep: Fajr, then sit with morning adhkar until sunrise, then two rak'ahs once the sun is up, and another two around mid-morning on days when it is easy. On days when it is forgotten, nothing is owed; there is no harm in praying extra voluntary rak'ahs at another permitted time.
Duha and Friday
On Friday the window is the same, but the time just before Dhuhr is busy with Jumu'ah. Praying duha earlier, around mid-morning, avoids the rush; the forbidden period at the zenith is debated for Friday in particular, and the details are in forbidden prayer times.
For specific questions, for instance whether to pray duha when arriving late to a workplace, ask a scholar or imam you trust.

Questions and answers
Is duha the same as ishraq?
Ishraq is the name some scholars give to duha prayed at the very start of its window, soon after sunrise. Many treat ishraq and duha as one prayer with different names; others count them separately. Praying two rak'ahs after the sun has risen fully satisfies both views.
How many rak'ahs is duha?
At least two. Four is reported (Muslim 719), and Umm Hani saw the Prophet pray eight on the day Makkah was opened (Bukhari 1176), though some scholars take that as a prayer of victory rather than duha. Pray in pairs with salam after every two.
What is the best time for duha?
When the sun has risen high and the ground is warm, roughly the last part of the morning before the forbidden time near noon. A hadith in Sahih Muslim (748) connects the prayer of the oft-returning to the time when the young camels feel the heat of the sand.
Can I pray duha at work?
Yes. It takes three to five minutes for two rak'ahs. Many people pray it during a mid-morning break in a quiet room, the same way they would pray Dhuhr later.
What do I recite in duha?
Al-Fatiha and any surah or verses. Some people recite al-Shams and al-Duha because of their names, but no particular surah is required.
