This guide explains common views and sources. It is not a fatwa. For your own situation, ask a scholar or imam you trust.

Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Decree, is better than a thousand months (Qur'an 97:3). The Qur'an was sent down in it (97:1; 44:3), the angels descend in it, and it is peace until the rising of dawn (97:4–5). Whoever stands in prayer on it with faith and hope of reward has his past sins forgiven (Sahih al-Bukhari 1901). Its exact night is hidden; the Prophet (peace be upon him) told us to seek it in the odd nights of the last ten of Ramadan (Sahih al-Bukhari 2017).

This page gives the expected Gregorian dates of those nights in 2027, the dua, and a plan that works for people with jobs and children.

The odd nights in Ramadan 2027

Expected dates assume 1 Ramadan 1448 = Monday 8 February 2027 (Umm al-Qura and Diyanet). An Islamic night begins at sunset, so "the 27th night" starts at Maghrib on the evening before the 27th day of fasting.

Night of Ramadan Begins at Maghrib on Ends at Fajr on
21st Saturday 27 February 2027 Sunday 28 February
23rd Monday 1 March 2027 Tuesday 2 March
25th Wednesday 3 March 2027 Thursday 4 March
27th Friday 5 March 2027 Saturday 6 March
29th Sunday 7 March 2027 Monday 8 March

Diyanet's official 2027 list gives Kadir Gecesi as the evening of Friday 5 March, which agrees with the table.

If your country started Ramadan on Tuesday 9 February, add one day to every row: the 27th night becomes the evening of Saturday 6 March. If your country ends up with 30 days of Ramadan, the 29th night is still the evening of 7 March but there is one more night, the 30th, on the evening of Monday 8 March; many scholars say the even nights deserve effort too. Check the expected start for your country on Ramadan 2027.

Because it is hidden, the safest plan is to treat all ten nights as candidates and put the most into the odd ones. The Prophet (peace be upon him) tightened his waist-wrapper, stayed up and woke his family in these nights (Sahih al-Bukhari 2024).

The dua of the night

Aisha asked what to say if she knew which night it was. The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught her:

Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun, tuhibbu al-'afwa, fa'fu 'anni. "O Allah, You are Pardoning and You love pardon, so pardon me." (Jami' al-Tirmidhi 3513)

Repeat it often, in prostration, between tarawih rak'ahs, after witr, and in the last hour before Fajr. More duas for the month are in duas for Ramadan.

Signs of the night

Reports describe a calm, clear night, neither hot nor cold, and a sunrise the next morning that is bright but without strong rays (reported by Muslim and others). These signs are only recognised after the fact; they are not a method of planning. Plan on the dates, not on the weather.

A simple plan for each odd night

This plan assumes a northern-hemisphere city in early March, where Maghrib is around 17:50 and Fajr around 05:00, so the night is about eleven hours long. Adjust to your Ramadan timetable.

Before Maghrib (10 minutes). Make dua while waiting for iftar; the fasting person's dua at iftar is not rejected (reported by Ibn Majah). Ask for the night.

Maghrib to Isha (about 90 minutes). Iftar, Maghrib prayer, a light meal. Give some charity, even a small online donation, so that if this is the night, your sadaqah falls in it.

Isha and tarawih (about 90 minutes). Pray in the mosque if you can; whoever prays Isha and Fajr in congregation gets the reward of the night in prayer (reported by Muslim). Stay for witr. See tarawih prayer.

Sleep (4 to 5 hours). Sleep is not a waste; it lets you pray the last part of the night properly. Say the dua before sleeping.

Last third of the night (from about 02:00). Two to eight rak'ahs of tahajjud with long recitation, then dua in prostration and sitting. This is the hour Allah descends to the nearest heaven and asks who is seeking forgiveness (Sahih al-Bukhari 1145; Sahih Muslim 758).

Before Fajr (30 minutes). Suhoor, istighfar, the dua of the night once more. Pray Fajr in congregation.

If you can only do one block, choose the last third. If you can only do five minutes, say the dua with full attention.

For people who work

  • Ask early for leave or short days on Thursday 4 March and Friday 5 March (around the 27th night) and, if possible, the whole final week.
  • Pray tarawih in a mosque near work or home rather than skipping it for lack of time.
  • Nap after Dhuhr or straight after iftar for twenty minutes.
  • Treat every odd night as a possible one; do not save everything for the 27th.

For a fuller programme, including i'tikaf in the mosque, read the last ten nights and i'tikaf. To finish the Qur'an by the end of the month, see a Ramadan Qur'an plan.

All dates on this page are expected. The actual night in your country depends on when Ramadan began there, which depends on moon sighting or the local authority and may differ by a day.

Questions and answers

Is Laylat al-Qadr definitely the 27th night?

No. The Prophet said to seek it in the odd nights of the last ten (Sahih al-Bukhari 2017). The 27th is the most widely observed because of several companions' reports, but it can be any of the last ten nights, and many scholars say it may move from year to year.

On which Gregorian date is the 27th night in 2027?

If Ramadan begins on 8 February 2027, the 27th night begins at sunset on Friday 5 March 2027 and ends at Fajr on Saturday 6 March. Turkey's Diyanet lists Kadir Gecesi on 5 March. If your country began Ramadan on 9 February, it is the evening of Saturday 6 March.

What should I do on the night?

Pray, read Qur'an, make dua and give charity. The Prophet taught Aisha to say: O Allah, You are Pardoning and love pardon, so pardon me (reported by al-Tirmidhi 3513). Praying it with faith and hope of reward brings forgiveness of past sins (Sahih al-Bukhari 1901).

Does the night start at Maghrib or at midnight?

At Maghrib. An Islamic night runs from sunset to true dawn. So the night of the 27th begins at iftar on the 26th fast and ends at suhoor.

I have work the next morning. Is a short effort worth it?

Yes. The reward is for the night, not for staying awake the whole of it. Pray Isha and tarawih in congregation, make dua before sleeping, and get up a little before suhoor for a few rak'ahs. That covers the night with effort at both ends.
