Eid al-Fitr, the festival of breaking the fast, is 1 Shawwal, the day after the last fast of Ramadan. In 2027 it is expected on Tuesday 9 March. The Umm al-Qura calendar gives Ramadan 1448 29 days (8 February to 8 March), and Turkey's Diyanet lists Ramazan Bayramı on 9 March with the eve (arefe) on Monday 8 March. In countries that require a sighting of the Shawwal crescent, Eid may fall on Wednesday 10 March if the moon is not seen on the evening of 8 March. Indonesia's public holiday list, for example, already blocks 10 and 11 March for Idulfitri.

Why the date may split

The astronomical new moon is on 8 March 2027 at 09:29 UTC. By sunset the same day the crescent is only 8 to 12 hours old, which is on the edge of visibility: possible with optical aid or in favourable regions, unlikely with the naked eye in much of Asia. So:

  • Calculation-based authorities (Diyanet, Umm al-Qura civil calendar, FCNA) fix 9 March.
  • Sighting-based countries (Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Morocco, Indonesia and Malaysia under the MABIMS criterion) decide on the night of 8 March. If no sighting, they complete 30 days and celebrate on 10 March.

Both outcomes are legitimate. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to break the fast when you see the crescent and to complete thirty days if it is hidden (Sahih al-Bukhari 1909; Sahih Muslim 1081). Follow your country's or community's announcement. Expected dates for each country are on Ramadan 2027; how committees decide is in moon sighting explained.

The night before: takbir and zakat al-fitr

From sunset on the last day of Ramadan until the Eid prayer, it is sunnah to say the takbir aloud, at home, in the street and in the mosque:

Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha illa Allah; Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, wa lillahi al-hamd. "Allah is greatest, Allah is greatest, there is no god but Allah; Allah is greatest, Allah is greatest, and to Allah belongs all praise."

The Qur'an links this to the end of the fast: complete the number of days and magnify Allah for having guided you (2:185, the meaning). Some add "Allahu akbar kabira, wal-hamdu lillahi kathira" and other reported wordings; all are fine.

Zakat al-fitr must be given before the Eid prayer (Sahih al-Bukhari 1503; Sahih Muslim 984). The amount is one sa' of staple food, about 2.5 to 3 kg, or its cash value where that is accepted, for every member of the household. Details and local amounts are in zakat al-fitr.

The morning of Eid: sunnahs in order

  1. Ghusl before going out.
  2. Best clothes, and perfume for men.
  3. Eat something before the prayer, traditionally an odd number of dates. The Prophet (peace be upon him) did not go out on the day of Eid al-Fitr until he had eaten dates (Sahih al-Bukhari 953). This marks that the fast is over.
  4. Say the takbir on the way.
  5. Walk if you can, and return by a different route (Sahih al-Bukhari 986).
  6. Pray the Eid prayer in congregation, ideally in an open space or the largest mosque; women, children and the elderly are encouraged to attend.
  7. Listen to the khutbah afterwards.
  8. Greet people, visit family, give gifts, and make the day a celebration for children.

The Eid prayer

Two rak'ahs, prayed after sunrise and before noon, with extra takbirs: in the Hanafi way, three in the first rak'ah before recitation and three in the second after it; in the majority way, seven in the first and five in the second. There is no adhan or iqamah. The khutbah follows the prayer. Step-by-step instructions, with what to do if you miss it, are in how to pray the Eid prayer.

Expected prayer time: between about 07:30 and 10:00 local time on 9 March 2027. In London sunrise is around 06:30 that day, in Istanbul 07:28, in Makkah 06:36, in Karachi 06:49; mosques usually start 30 to 90 minutes after sunrise. Confirm with your mosque.

Questions and answers

What date is Eid al-Fitr in 2027?

Expected on Tuesday 9 March 2027 (1 Shawwal 1448) according to the Umm al-Qura calendar and Turkey's Diyanet, which both give Ramadan 29 days. Countries that need a sighting on the evening of 8 March and do not get one will celebrate on Wednesday 10 March.

Why might Eid be on different days in different countries?

The new moon is on the morning of 8 March 2027 (09:29 UTC). Sighting it that evening is possible in some places but not guaranteed. Calculation-based authorities already fix 9 March; sighting-based ones decide on the night.

When should zakat al-fitr be paid?

Before the Eid prayer. Most people pay in the last few days of Ramadan so that it reaches the poor in time. Paying it after the prayer counts only as ordinary charity.

Can I fast on Eid day?

No. Fasting on the day of Eid al-Fitr is forbidden. The six voluntary fasts of Shawwal begin from 2 Shawwal onwards.

What time is the Eid prayer?

After sunrise, once the sun has risen a little, and before midday. Many mosques hold it between 07:30 and 10:00; large cities hold several sittings. Check your mosque, and arrive early.
